Enjoy a weekend of stories! Wrap up warm and you can make your way between different historic homes to listen to stories around the fire. We will be telling a variety of historic tales, classics and new work inspired by the Museum.

We will have the annual wassailing on the Saturday too. You can join a procession, with music, songs and short performances, from the market square to the orchard for the wassail to ensure a good harvest. In the orchard an apple tree will be decorated – there is a ceremony with bread, salt and cider. The audience joins in with the ‘Wassail’ shout and makes lots of noise with bells, rattles or whistles*.

For the wassailing, there will three 50-minute sessions starting at 1 pm, 2.15 pm or 3.30 pm. Pre-booking not required.

INFORMATION FOR VISITORS

*Visitors are asked to bring something to bang (e.g. an old tin can), rattle or blow to make a loud noise during the Wassailing – the musicians will let you know the time in the proceedings to do this.

Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please also wear warm clothes and walking shoes or boots.

Our waterside café will be open, plus there are indoor and outdoor picnic areas. Dogs on leads are welcome at the daytime event and there is ample free parking. Please note that the Museum is a no-smoking site. Visitors with access needs are advised to read our accessibility page in advance of their visit.

For 2020 we have new topics in our popular series of Historic Life weekends. There will be a chance to chat to experts, see demonstrations and displays as well as explore the Museum. These are ideal for people specifically interested in the subject areas, as well as those generally interested in a topic and looking for an enjoyable, relaxing day out with a difference.
